Health researchers at University of California, Los Angeles Health, who led the trial, describe it as already a standard, non-drug option doctors recommend for chronic insomnia.
A related trial arm also tested Tai Chi against the same sleep-education control and found it lowered inflammation markers tied to aging, showing multiple non-drug paths may target the same biological pathways. Together these findings paint insomnia as more than an annoying inconvenience. It looks like an active driver of cellular wear and tear that can, at least partly, be reversed.
What Scientists Still Won’t Claim
Here’s the honest caveat: epigenetic clocks are useful lab tools, but they aren’t yet proven stand-ins for real-world outcomes like disease or death. A 2022 review on aging research standards laid out the steps still needed before regulators or doctors could treat a shifting epigenetic clock as solid proof that someone will live longer or healthier. Researchers behind the insomnia trial made the same point, framing their result as a treatment effective at slowing a biological aging marker, not a guaranteed lifespan extension.
That distinction matters, but it shouldn’t overshadow the practical takeaway. For decades, doctors have told insomnia patients their main risk was daytime grogginess. This body of research says the stakes run deeper, down to the molecular processes tied to aging itself. Anyone lying awake at 3 a.m. now has one more solid reason to get that problem treated instead of just living with it.
