8 Shocking Foods That Are Not What You Think at the Grocery Store

Labels at the grocery store can be deceiving. 100% organic products may not be that organic. Olive oil may be mixed with peanut oil and your “healthy snacks” may have too much sugar. In short, most of what you see in the grocery store is not exactly what you think they are and in this article will discuss eight foods that are not what they claim to be.

8 Foods That Are Not What You Think They Are

Olive Oil

Some manufacturers claim that their olive oil is 100% pure, but sometimes that is untrue. There is a high chance that the oil in your kitchen has been mixed with other types of oil. This is a big deal if you are allergic to peanut oil because these manufacturers mix peanut oil with olive oil.

Maple Syrup or Pancake Syrup

Most times, pancake syrup is often mistaken or disguised as maple syrup. Maple syrup is gotten from a maple tree, while pancake syrup, on the other hand, is made from corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup; it also includes- coloring, preservatives, and flavoring.

Lobster or Langostino

When you think you are enjoying a lobster dish, you might actually eat langostino. Langostino is a different animal from the hermit crab family. It is also called a squat lobster. It tastes and feels like a lobster, but it is better than the real thing and is cheaper.

Flavorings

Most packaged foods usually claim to contain only natural flavors, but there is sometimes nothing ‘natural’ about the flavors. Many companies have tried to mimic the flavors of real food, but recently, FDA banned a lot of synthetic flavorings. If you want to eat healthily, it is better to stick to the original flavors found in whole foods.

White Chocolate

White chocolate is very yummy, so sweet and creamy. But according to the FDA, white chocolate isn’t really chocolate because the FDA says chocolate must contain at least ten percent of chocolate liquor. White chocolate is a mixture of cocoa butter, milk, etc. but no chocolate liquor.

Fruit Juice

Most times, fruit juice is not really a hundred percent fruit juice. To be sure, check the ingredient list; if it is long, then what you are buying is not all fruit juice.

Vanilla Flavoring or Vanilla Extract

Vanilla flavoring is not the same as vanilla extract. While the extract is made with vanilla pods and ethanol, the flavoring, on the other hand, is made with synthetic vanillin.

Tilefish

Tilefishes are a family of marine fish that belong to the Malacanthidae family and are typically tiny perciform fish. They love sandy environments, particularly those close to coral reefs. If your immunity is compromised, you should avoid it, but sometimes markets swap it for other popular species like halibut and red snapper.
