When you’re on the go and hunger pains strike, it’s easy to dash into the closest drive-thru. But, that’s not always the healthiest option. If you’re trying to maintain a healthy diet, it’s best to plan ahead and have a few snacks with you.
Protein takes more energy to digest than simple carbohydrates, and it also makes you feel full. For this reason, high-protein snacks might be the best thing for you to bring with you when you are spending the day away from the house.
Portable Snacks to Try
Jerky: Jerky is often made from beef, chicken, turkey, and salmon. Most grocery stores sell it, but keep in mind that store-bought versions usually have a lot of added sugar and artificial ingredients. It might be best to make your own.
Trail Mix: Trail mix is a mix of dried fruits and nuts that can also include chocolate and grains. It has 8 grams of protein per 2-ounce serving, which makes it a good source of protein.
Almonds and pistachios have a little more protein than other nuts like walnuts and cashews, so you can add them to trail mix to make it more protein-rich.
Veggies and Yogurt: Vegetables make great snacks, but they don’t have much protein on their own. You can get more protein from them if you eat them with a yogurt dip.
Most of the time, yogurt dip is made by mixing yogurt with herbs and flavors, like dill and lemon juice, as in this recipe. Greek yogurt is best for getting more protein because it has almost twice as much protein as regular yogurt.
Make Snacking Fun
While you’re planning your high-protein snacks, add in a dash of fun. Instead of plastic bags or a simple lunch box, put your snacks in a bento box. You can even get mini cutters to cut your veggies or fruit into fun shapes. This is excellent if you have children who would rather grab a kid’s meal at the local fast food place, but it’s also fun for adults.
Letting your kids get in on the planning and packing is a great idea as well since it teaches them about nutrition and portion sizes. The amount of creativity that goes into some bento boxes is astonishing.
Don’t Forget Something to Drink
Water is always your best bet when you’re out and about and need something healthy to drink. Consider infusing your water with fruit for an extra kick. Dropping the drive-thru habit might be hard at first, but you’ll be glad you did in the long run!
